Our Mission

STUDIO 42 ASKS

Launched in 2001, Studio 42 is a not-for-profit theatrical production company. In the last several years, Artistic Director Moritz von Stuelpnagel has put its sole focus on producing what we call the “unproducible.” One of the biggest questions we receive is how something can be unproducible if we actually produce it? We welcome this question as an opportunity to discuss why anything should be unproducible.

IS UNJUST

The word “unproducible” is ripped straight out of the rejection letters from theaters all over the country. Even the exciting group of playwrights that Studio 42 fosters, including notable Tony-winners and Pulitzer-nominees, often faces trepidation from producers confronted with their more outlandish work. But we refuse to suffer anxiety over challenging our audience, or worry that complicated technical aspects of a production can only be solved with cash, or fear that stage directions without straightforward solutions cannot possibly be realized. Armed with clever and adventurous directors and designers – most of whom have experience both on and off Broadway – Studio 42 sets out to prove that a project worth realizing can be realized, using little more than creativity and courage.

IS UNPREDICTABLE

We love our audiences because they expect the unexpected. Those who come to see a Studio 42 production constantly challenge us to be unsafe, surprising and bold. The best criticism we can get from these trendsetters is that we can go further. Our fans agree with us: the work we present shouldn’t be considered “unproducible.”

IS UNEQUALED

A donation to Studio 42 is a pledge for audacious and irreverent theater. If you enjoy the experience you have with us, please consider supporting a mission that’s larger than this company; we seek to foster a host of artists who challenge us all to keep theater fresh.
