What's "Unproducible"?

Launched in 2001, not-for-profit Studio 42 is NYC's producer of "unproducible" plays

The word “unproducible” is ripped straight out of rejection letters from theaters all over the country, denoting scripts in which the potential depravity, experimental structure, or scale of spectacle take them out of consideration for producers in their right minds.

Even the exciting group of playwrights that we foster – including Tony-winners and Pulitzer-nominees – often faces trepidation from producers confronted with their more outlandish work. But we maintain that the fringe of the imagination is especially fertile ground.

Armed with clever and adventurous directors and designers – most of whom have experience both on and off Broadway – Studio 42 sets out to prove that a project worth realizing can be, using little more than creativity and courage.

We love our audiences because they expect the unexpected. The best criticism we can get from these trendsetters is that we can go further. Our fans agree with us: the “unproducible” work we present isn’t impossible.
